. megyn: simon, michelle obama told us that barack obama doesn't think of us as us and them, yet last night elizabeth warren talks about how oil companies are bad, billionaires aren't great, wall street ceos act like we should thank them. isn't that divisive language? all wall street ceos are bad, billionaires are paying lower tax rates than their secretaries and oil companies, i mean, isn't that the kind of division that michelle obama was trying to say the president doesn't do? >> i don't think there's anything that elizabeth warren said last night that was untrue, and i think that part of what the -- it's a little loud in here, i'm doing my best -- [laughter] i love that video, by the way, megyn, that was terrific before we came on. i think what elizabeth warren was trying to say last night, and i think what the democrats are saying this week is we just have a different vision for how the economy should work than the republicans. we believe that we're all in this together, that people should pay their fair share, we believe that the government has to have the needed resources to in

fighters. weather moved tonight indoors. but after a first night owned by michelle obama, after a second night owned by president clinton, expectations for the finale are sky high. msnbc's primetime coverage of the democratic national convention's final night begins right now. >>> thank you for joining us. i'm rachel maddow here at msnbc headquarters in new york. i'm joined by ed shultz, melissa harris-perry, chris hayes, and the senior strategist steve schmidt. lawrence o'donnell and al sharpton will be joining us in a moment. leading us from the site of the convention is our colleague and friend chris matthews. you said on opening night this week that democrats were having more fun than republicans. but that didn't necessarily mean that they were winning. the democrats have been ecstatic at previous conventions where they had gone on to lose. so how do you rate the democrats' happiness and their prospects? >> wow. you're hitting me with the toughest questions. there's two months left with a lot of economic news to come. we've got the unemployment rate coming out tomorrow morning. two m

and applause ] oh, fantastic. you guys, here's some political news, first lady michelle obama is receiving praise for the speech she gave last night at the democratic national convention. everyone was impressed, even fox news called it "not the worst." that's very nice of them. speaking of the dnc, earlier in the night actor kal penn told viewers to use the twitter hash tag "sexy face" when talking about his speech. which got weird when bill clinton was like [ as clinton ] "there goes the first line of my speech." actually, president obama's speech at the dnc has been moved inside to the time warner arena, due to weather concerns. you can tell it's time warner, cause obama will give the speech two weeks from friday, between the hours of 12 and 4. [ laughter ] you guys, starbucks is working on a new plan to recycle old coffee grounds and turn them into laundry detergent. which explains why the snuggle bear hasn't slept in two straight weeks. [ laughter ] check this out. a farmer in germany accidentally planted a crop of marijuana, after thinking that he was growing sunflowers. yeah, the far

night i want a man who had the good sense to marry michelle obama. [ applause ] i want barack obama to be the next president of the united states. and i proudly nominate him to be the standard bearer of the democratic party. [ cheering and applause ] now folks, in tampa a few days ago we heard a lot of talk about how the president, the democrats don't really believe in free enterprise, how we want everybody to be dependent on the government. how bad we are for the economy, this republican narrative, alternative universe says that everyone of us in this room who amounts to anything we're all completely self centered. one of the greatest chairman the democratic party ever had, bob strauss, used to say that every politician wants every vote tore believe he was born in a log cabin he built himself. but strauss admitted, it ain't so. we democrats, we think the country works better with a strong middle class, with real opportunities for poor folks to work their way in to it with relentless focus on the future with business and government actually working together to promote growth. and br

have a funny question for you after listening to nancy pelosi speak now and thinking back on michelle obama last night talking about being the mom and she nancy pelosi introduced herself as a mother and a grandmother. and we saw her daughter and granddaughter in the crowd. is it possibly a strong, efficient, accomplished political woman anymore without saying you are a mom first? >> i am not a mom. i guess it is -- absolutely. but i have to laugh about all the times where nancy pelosi has described her leadership in terms of motherhood and in terms of being a woman. and i think it does make her a powerful leader. and i think my life experiences that i bring to the job everyday also make me a strong leader. >> and can i follow-up. michelle obama could have told an alternative story that she went to princeton, she went to harvard law and became a successful lawyer. she went to the chicago hospital system making $300,000 a year. top 1%. it was a successful career story. and she probably had doubts about leaving that behind. why is that not possible to tell that story? >> well, it is poss
